NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 5 – After clinching a hat-trick of titles at the World Half Marathon, 2017 Sports Personality of the Year nominee Geoffrey Kamworor is now aiming to successfully end the season on a high with a title defence at the New York Marathon in November.
Kamworor, who put up a spirited fight to retain the World Half title in 1:00:02 in Valencia on March 24, believes the achievement in Spain will spur him to do even better in the new season, especially as he also aims to compete for the IAAF Diamond League that starts in May with the first meet in Doha, Qatar.
“It was such a great achievement winning the Half Marathon for a third consecutive time. Now I want to go to New York and win it for a second time. For me, that would be the perfect ending to the year,” Kamworor said.
The 26-year-old won his first ever full marathon title in 2017 and he now wants to affirm his supremacy on the road by winning this year’s edition in November.
“I want to do well on the track too and my focus is on the Diamond League though I have not decided whether I will run 5k or 10k. I feel really confident now because I have prepared well and I am confident,” added Kamworor, who won Kenya a silver medal in the 2015 World Championship in Beijing.
Kenya missed the team title losing it to Ethiopia with the next best finisher after Kamworor being Leonard Barsoton who placed 12th. However, Kamworor has lauded the team for their effort. “I want to thank the team because they were cooperative and hard working. I am proud of them.”
