If so much of Leicester’s season has been based on teams struggling with Vardy’s pace on the break, you would not have guessed it from this game, as Leicester found other ways to win.
Mahrez showed opportunism of which Vardy would have been proud, before Swansea’s susceptibility at set pieces was exposed by Ulloa and Drinkwater. It was the first time the midfielder had provided an assist for anyone other than Vardy this season. The third goal came from the kind of counterattack that has characterised their campaign, as Schlupp ran from the halfway line to eventually set up Ulloa to tap in.
The worry for Leicester before the game was that Ulloa’s more physical, less pacy game might disrupt their attacking style and deny them one of their key strengths, but instead it proved a positive as he offered a muscular presence.
It shouldn’t be forgotten, though, that Leicester enjoyed a break in another way: Williams’ error. Up until then, Leicester had been trying their usual trick of hitting long balls, but with only Shinji Okazaki making runs on the turn, it meant nothing was really happening until Swansea’s captain gave them the greatest of gifts.
It’s funny how things turn out. Had that simple unforced error not happened, Leicester might have been properly tested and this could have been a very different game. Instead, they continue to look like they will be very different title winners.
